Scottish Wood Ant

Confined to the Highlands, the Scottish wood ant is one of several species that build large mound nests of twigs and leaf litter in Scottish woods. Its nests can be up to three metres in circumference and one metre in height. Upwards of 100,000 workers, along with several queen ants, can be found in a nest at any one time. The workers prey on caterpillars and tend aphids to suck honeydew from surrounding trees.
