Red Fox

Possibly the one mammal most synonymous with the British countryside, the red fox is now a relatively common sight in Scotland's cities where it is just as happy to feed off human leftovers as it is its traditional prey. Sometimes regarded as vermin, the fox - distinguished by its pointed ears and long bushy tail - was recently given a reprieve when the Scottish parliament outlawed the long-established practice of hunting with hounds. This familiar predator looks certain to remain a key character in the British wildlife world.
