Orkney Vole

How this rodent, whose closest relatives are natives of the Balkan states, ever came to end up on the Orkney islands is a mystery. What we do know is that they have been here for over 4000 years. The archipelago's many hen harriers and short-eared owls hunt voles in the Orkney undergrowth. Modern farming practices are, however, the rodent¿s greatest threat. Decreasing numbers have ensured that the Orkney Vole remains an elusive beast.
