Black-throated Diver

These streamlined diving birds sit low in the water and dive with consummate ease. On land they are clumsy, barely able to walk with their legs so far back on their bodies. They are easily disturbed when breeding and their general vulnerability to human activity has resulted in their rarity as a breeding species. They generally breed on large inland lochs with small islands and winter in sheltered coastal waters with bays, spending most time fairly close to shore and feeding on fish.
