Barnacle Goose

The barnacle goose is a medium-sized, sociable goose, with black head, neck and breast, and a creamy-white face, which contrasts with the white belly, blue-grey barred back and black tail. It flies in packs and long lines, with a noisy chorus of barking or yapping sounds. It winters in Scotland on saltmarshes, lowland fields near coasts, and offshore islands with suitable grassland, arriving in autumn after breeding in the Arctic Circle. It can be seen in the largest numbers around the Solway Firth and on Islay, where it feeds on leaves, stems, roots and seeds.
