Ospreys return to the Tweed Valley Osprey Centre

Osprey A busy Spring at the Tweed Valley Osprey Centre sees the return of all the female ospreys and the beginning of the mating season.

The first male arrived on the 10th April and wasted no time in mating with one of the females and an egg has been laid at the back up nest.

The female at the main nest site had a new suitor appeared this year. Ospreys normally mate for life and males prove their suitability as a mate by offering fish to the female. This act shows that they can provide for her and her young if they were to mate. But this new male instead cheekily tried to take her fish from her. She was not impressed with this less than romantic gesture!

On the 17th April, her male partner from last year arrived back and they have mated. She is now sitting on an egg and it is likely that more will be laid over the next few days.

To keep up with the latest activities at the Tweed Valley Osprey Centre why not pay a visit. It can be found 2 miles east of Peebles on the A72 at Glentress Forest. It is behind the bike hire station and is open from 10am to 5pm daily. For more information contact 0845 367 3787.
