Kayak code highlights Moray Firth dolphin disturbance

dolphin

With an increase in the number of people using sea kayaks in the Moray Firth the Inverness Canoe Club's code of best practice has been highlighted to help minimise the risk of disturbance occurring when kayaks are on the water in areas used by the dolphins.

The Inverness Canoe Club's code was put together in consultation with the Dolphin Space Programme and Scottish Natural Heritage and should be read on consultation with the Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code which provides more generic advice and information for water users.

Scottish Natural Heritage has received reports from members of the public that in some cases the code is not being adhered to and reports of disturbance by marine craft in the Moray Firth is increasing, some of which have lead to police investigations. Adherence to the code will ensure that problems such as this do not occur and visitors can come and enjoy the area without disturbing the animals or unintentionally falling foul of the law.
